Prior to this a man only had to tell his wife she was divorced and she had to leave forthwith. Now if the man in the household did that, he had to leave! Grameen members have successfully completed quarter of a million sub sub prime mortgages without one foreclosure.

3 1996 saw the start up of 2 most visionary community entrepreneur investments ever made by and for poor people – the now famous mobile telephone lady and the as yet little known fact that Grameen members now install more solar units than the whole of the USA. Prior to 1996 Grameen had evolved round nearly 100,000 village centres (meeting places owned by the women) where up to 60 members met. Their knowhow was only connected as far as cross-fertilization of grameen’s service employees could manage. Once every village had a shared mobile phone – an intervention which must have been as revolutionary as a telegram office in the wild west of the 19th century – vital information started to be networked all across 100,000 hubs. Unlike Grameen or BRAC, it does not itself design entrepreneurial franchises beyond pure financial services. It is primarily banking for those among the individual poor who after 20 years of communally operated microcredit now want to be served individually without the need of peer support groups or village-wide goals. Potentially, ASA is the nearest system design the West may compare to what Main Street might want from local banks on the side of investing in the productivity of the customer as well as the hi-trust community-building which families need invested in.

The impact of cafes (one hour open meetings but on particular crisis invitations - ie truncated open spaces) where invitations are past through all changemakers networks has never been higher. Q“The international human rights framework” means what?

Mary Robinson: I’m talking about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the six core human rights instruments:
the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights;
the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights;
the Convention on the Rights of the Child;
the Convention Against Torture;
the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,
and the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.

Every country in the world has ratified at least one of these. Many have ratified more than three. Some have ratified all six. We see them as important tools for holding governments to account and we aim to be rigorous in our analysis of how this can be done.
But our aim is also to try and show young idealistic people who are frequently concerned with the environment, or poverty and inequality – to activists, if you will: “Look, you are interested in trying to make sure that governments keep a clean environment, have regard for the lifestyles of indigenous peoples, and work for fair trade rules. Well, it’s exactly the same for human rights – from non-discrimination to the basic rights to food, safe water, education and health care. We are talking rights not needs. There are standards that governments have signed up to – but nobody is holding them to account.”
Let me give you an example that stays with me from when I was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In April 1999 the civil society groups in Brazil were fed up trying to get the government of Brazil to file its report under the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. So they compiled an alternative report on Brazil. They were a broad coalition of NGOs, churches, trade unions, black Brazilians, the landless, those working in child rights, and they came together and sent a small group to Geneva with their alternative report.
I met them as High Commissioner. We explained they could not have a formal hearing before the UN Committee which monitors implementation of the Covenant because only a government is entitled to that, but we commended them. As it happened, in May 1999 I was going to Brazil. I put the alternative report under my arm. When I got off the plane I met journalists and said, “Here is the alternative report, now where’s the government’s?”
The government was very embarrassed. They then told me they would bring out a report very quickly. But I said: “No, no, I don’t want that. I want to see the government working with the civil society groups to bring out a report that reflects reality.” And that is what happened. The result was more links between the civil society participants and the government representatives.
Shortly after, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro became minister of state for human rights. When I went back to Brazil two years later government and civil society groups were reporting on similar lines. The process had brought them closer together, not in comfortable dialogue but in real dialogue. So it’s a process that reinforces democracy.

Beyond the fashion of calling yourself an Entrepeneur

When Donald's Trump's latest apprentice mentioned on tv guide that he was writing a book on Entrepreneurship, I just thought that I'd better do a reacp of 30 years of my father's work on that and nearly 200 years of beliefs that The Economist gravitated due to being founded by one of the most visionary social entrepreneurs Britain has ever celebrated. My father and I have been working for 30 years on language as the great integration crisis of leadership as well as system theorists. My father's beginning in this was to publish Entrepreneurial Revolution in The Economist in 1976. To celebrate our 30th birthday of ER, which is actually close on the 200th birthday of the founder of The Economnist (probably the world's first social preneur as his only editorial goals were to repeal corn laws and end capital punishment - both Victorian England's remaining slave chains) , we invite you:

Above I have put one slide up which shows 200 years of preneurial language revolutions and since we are also mathematicians, we will need to slay the monopoly of tangible accounting which assigns 0 value to goodwill as a system flow and compounds maximum conflicts by separation every quarter. Knowing that's the fina system barrier is the only way that any system's theory can interface with changing leadership atop the wordl's biggest organsaitions be they corporate of government. As well as 30 years of ER scripts we have 22 years of death of distance scripts since tracking what webs will do has been my whole career and in 1984 I teamed up with my dad and a sci-fi writer to write a book on how 1984-2024 would challenge humanity to its wits end because becoming interconnected in obe generation was always going to be the biggest revolution our species had encountered ; and our species copes with revolutions in ways that spin either very good compound outcomes or in this case ones that will mean no 22nd century. So given this is just a language problem of eladership, why not open source the preneur word unless you can sugest one that can flow through more corridors of power without them knowing what confusion has open spaced

It seems that everything converges on one missing question which someone needs to brief Charlie on: are you on 6-year race or a 25 year race

We can assume - even from its current advertising campaiogn - that Exxon is on a 25-year race and will do everything it takes to spoil the 5 year race. If I am wrong, and that is not why CEO Raymond is one of Bush's 20 Gathering Storm leaders, please do inform me.

Let's be clear: the 25 year race uses patents and other blocks to collaboration everywhere that money can pay for them; it is entirely possible through photosynthesis energy to turn the corner on America's addiction to petroleum energy within 6 years, but it will take the mother of all collaborations. As a death of distance researcher 1 2 over the last 22 years, I have come to believe that collaboration knowledge cities -or at least networks of citizens - learn most about sustaining value multiplication -and other searches for economics of abundnace - from VILLAGES, as well as how these villages connect across the cities vibrancy of cultures and so to love harmony among peoples all over the world.

In terms of economics, the people -all 6 billion beings of us (and our lifetime's most open projects http://project30000.blogspot.com ) must unite to ensure the maths transparenctly maps sustainability for at least 2 million global villages (whether place or action learning gravitated) not an economics of numbers ruling solely so that the big gets bigger. Where I put economics you can insert other fi-fo--professional words: accounting, financing, investment, governance, law, communications as media and mediation. Now I am not sure I heard him identify what those were -maybe I (and a million friends of entrepreneurial revolutions) will have to visit google video and pay charlie 99 cents for a rerun. But anyway here's a possibly uplifting debate between me and you (indeed every netizen who loves transparently connecting until we discover the next big (and as Thomas Friedman and the 1.3 million reades of The World is Flat would say green enough) idea for 6 billion people to enjoy profitably working with) and perhaps him. Where's the flaw in this debate whatever culture inside New York you love most?

New York Magazines - indeed any big city's press - have been on my mind for 2 lifetimes- openly inquistive global leadership media being what my father as an economist http://ecosaintjames.blogspot.com helped to co-create, and around one of whose 30th aniversaries of hosting http://entrepreneurialrevolution.blogspot.com revolutionary network roundtables we celebrate in 2006. The head of Lazards was on tv a few days ago saying that he had made one investment for the company he knew would compound extraordinary wealth (perhaps even an exit startegy if the rest of whatver strategy merchants do turns out to be seen as less and less valuable). Buying a New York Magazine , I think the New Yorker.

Now he was talking about a magazine when coupled to the internet can be a city's number 1 exchange rather fear for whatever the most extravagant new yorkers are prepared to pay at the click of their fingertips for when they need the recipe or other codes to action a fashion or a party around them. But think of a different city magazine. One that kept on asking what abundant economics exhchanges could we co-create with in twin-city diversity collaborations. These might include deep social value like project30000 or revolutionise global industry sectors until their exponentials uptilt to use Thomas Friedman's core economic principle of today's ever flatter world.

What could Delhi-New York innovate that's best for the world. What could Wellington-New York innovate that's best for the world. It seems to me

InterCitizens could be debating thousands of experimental concepts in the knowledge that those which made progress would be reported back all round the city through the glossy magazine and its chattering classes. Everyone I have met who loves New York seems to echo a view along the lines : it make hustle & bustle more fun than anywhere else knows how on a big stage

So I suggest this as the first question we ask New Yorkers to respond to as a collaboration city, and if you live somewhere else how cabn we qualify the question in deeper contexts (NB I am not saying that any of us peoples want fun or hustle and bustle all of the time, but a city's cultural capacity to make hustle and bustle as fun as it can be for many different people's and sustain such diversity over time is interesting. )

It also leads me to the question: how do New Yorkers look after those who have the least opportunity to enjoy its extravagances but who have as much right to be there and those who have the most opportunity to play. What other questions does it lead you to voice?

March 8 : we want to make travel guides to grassroots scaleable up projects as popular as guides to hotels/ restaurants

the idea is to do an annual of 200 examples people have collaboratively voted for; to open source this so any network or interest group can mix and match their focused favourites with some worldwide examples; hopefully all the different hubs, open spaces and intercity forums where youthful cross-cultural citizens share ideas on what wishes could come true start collaborating (or at least doing zero-cost global marketing of ideas that it is vital to spread)

I welcome help with this idea - either by picking some of your favourites or finding ways someone's project urgently matches some news

We also aim to do stuff like publish a league table of 10 best for the world meetings and keep world citizens' web votes on this going? Is New York's clintonglobalinitiative in top 10? is ted.com? is http://www.microcreditsummit.org/? how does each global village meeting work? which could have micro replications , how could they all collaborate with each other to be more than their separate streams etc.

A basic law of transparency mapping is that transparent projects multiply each other's power, just as corrupt ones do through their own kind of perverted communications channels. Between 2005-2015 we are in a terminal battle between goodwill and badwill networks; which will win the value multiplying game and define the outcome of globalisation as sustaining or not? I don't know if Fazle is coming to New York this year for the Clinton Global Initiative. I have copied people at ashoka who both link the changemakers competition you asked me about and collaborate with Fazle and the other 4 social entrepreneur nets to have scaled worldwide acccording to skoll's dvds .They can probably tell us if they know he is in New York again. I have also copied Shamis whose dedicated energy to Somalia (her country) is unlikely to be matched by any of us.

It was BRAC that primarily helped UNICEF to licence Oral Rehydration in the 1980s-1990s - a solution BRAC had given to the world and which David Bornstein's social entrepreneur bible suggests made UNICEF entrepreneurial while James Grant led it (but not so much before or since).

Having had a bucketful of London's largest NGO's with make Poverty History in 2005, I think NW NGOs are mostly a waste of space. Doubtless there are some that are not wasteful but if empowerment systems basically map the opposite way round from global hierarchy ones - why would we at the tipping point expect that the transformation to empowerment is going to come from the chief hierarchicals?

More over Fazle has got partners together to tune of 0.25 billion dollars announced New York last year to bring BRAC to 6 African muslim countries including Tasmania which we have talked about, but not yet Somalia presumably because of the troubles there. Since BRAC is privatization of life threatening child services and primary education which need to be served within each community not over its heads, it would be the other side of madness if BRAC did not want to collaborate with you in ending African child malaria wherever it goes - unless I am missing something

One other idea : we have critical mass in tests around London which I would like to launch in New York this Spring. We call it collaboration cafe and we focus one cafe per crisis issue. We ask eg anyone who represents a serious "fight malaria network" in new york to come for an hour and listen to you guide them round the grassroots map the way you see it and then they can add on connections to your map in true collaboration spirit. It sounds to me as if we could find a quota of organisations in New York who could not afford to turn down a free invitation to one hour on such a vital matter- especially with American Idol targeting end malaria as its America's number 1 mass media action initiative for Africa

Surfing tipping points is something I have only ever seen 2 global brand leaders accomplish in 25 years of modelling studies of communications halo effects. They are so nearly always led astray from their founding action learning purpose by their ad agents or their accountants- the 2 professions least capable of facilitating change it is possible to imagine. One because their maths measures history not the future; the other because with tv's 20 second war of attention on your mind they have come to believe that truth is the last job an ad spot needs to care about. I have worked at or with almost all the largest ad agencies in the west - they are scary if you share the hi-trust entrepreneurial system view that communal truth is where sustainability openly begins and openly ends each cycle along the compound exponentials of lifetime integrity

Hubs are where citizens permanently raise questions about projects that could be done. Imagine the potential project being a tour you could go and look at; why should the future's humanitarian projects be as exciting to tour as historic site. As a network once formed hubs will be more relevant for worldwide circulation of knowhow than any singular social-good organisation or media platform because their aim is to collaborate with all who cares most out of each city. They know how to host open space meetings and link all citizen networks that have ever branched through the city. They do not separately box separate relationship building academics and practitioners, students from workers, one race or place's origin against another in ways that many NGOs and philanthropists do. The following BBC news article seems really interesting. I am especially impressed that they think that growing the fungi in question could become a "cottage industry" that localities can do for themselves, and might even replace mosquito bednets! Evidently, mosquitos once infected by the fungi immediately lose their taste for blood, stop being able to bring the parasite to maturity, and have hugely shortened lifespans. The statistic they report is that just 20% coverage of surface area where the mosquitos rest by fungus-covered sheets produced 76% drop in Malaria transmission rates.

I am just talking off the top of my head but I wouldn't overlook the connectivity for good that teachers in rural or grassroots communities can be. I am talking about the kind of teacher whose life mission is embedded in serving the community but also needs to work whatever mode exists for networking curricula - is it print, radio, or telecentre (ie computerised).

I have twice undergone large project work with the European Union including once whilst at Coopers & Lybrand. My impression was that every nation apart from Ireland got ripped off by the EU in compounding ways. As a reformed global branding expert interested in media transparency, I buy CK's "sandbox" idea that many global organisations could simplify branding they use for rich citizens to offer a basic service to rurals at one fiftieth of the cost (no loss of quality other than meaningless image-laden excess of choices and a society-wide commitment to a trust contract that like Microcredit says neither side will use lawyers in trying our best as service providers and communal customers). I assume its not particularly surprising to us that many of the earliest 50 times better value cases identified by Bottom of Pyramid Alumni turn out to be in health areas. (Of course if organisationally a global branded corporate finds it hard to have one department charging wealthy citizens 50 times more than the marginal cost to you of also serving the poor, you can always make a start by doing a partnership with Grameen -though if the missing audit of goodwill was required to save the world from Delaware corporate lawyers, truth would immediately be valuable as well as convenient )

Peter : due to transparency mapping interests, I have had rather a long history of following corporate responsibility groups -most of them have gone nowhere in the last 15 years though they are now being challenged to raise their game to a more intergated system level - one reason I can say this is that I guess edited a journal on Total Corporate Brand Responsibility about 4 year ago

most CEOs who want to preserve some each way credentials are jumping ship from the language of responsibility to sustainability (investment); at the same time some of the players are belatedly having another look at corporate brand responsibility where the humanitarian leverage the org could competently have also this happens to match a particular chairman's passion or reputation

I have been trying to keep track at a name by name basis of which of these corporate boardroom names turn up across several meeting fomats including gutsy ones like Clinton Global Initiative and or are starting new benchmaking clusters on their own initiatives; if we are to sustain the world, we will need the mother of all Baldrige benchmarking's part 2 - perversely about my last official job at Coopers & Lybrand was to write an article on what future benchmarking would need to be that tangible Baldrige was not for Robert Heller's annual yearbook of about 1994! There is also the fact that before he left the UN, Kofi Annan added a 10th principle to the global compact that corporations had been signing on the advisc of Transparency Intl's Eigen. Previously the 9 principles had not had a systemic structure so anyone could claim that there organsiation was complying. The 10th principle changes that. Hello!Pleasure to see the teams in this region going on stronger and stronger. I dearly appreciate the floated ideas, ideologies from our global members. I think Ms lab is heading to another wider scope of reaching more individuals, as Andrius, had to get a very broader vision for our businesses and even opportunities. Independent persons are entitled to do much better when open minded. The in stints we received from the global Villages headed by Franz, is great and it is what always makes me stronger.I need those in Africa to focus on the said opportunities and join the rest in deciding what is the next move; concerning creating small projects and organizing others to contribute in the sharing which is always the course for Ms Lab and it's working groups. I dearly, appreciate the hard work we get from Janet, Andrius, Jeff, Maria, Markuz, Franz,Steve and all, but what is`significant here is what is the overall achievement of our willingness and non-willing as Andrius points n the Universial Language.I was chating with Fred Kayiwa from Kampala and learnt more on him than I had imagined. Fred is a potential man in this region and having those who are motivated by interests like Fred, is n itself encouraging. Fred is eager to work more for connecting us with many in Uganda. I tend to know some people's potentiality, but when it comes to taking risks for development they shy away for personal gains, but if,Fred is here 4 u, then we have to join hands with him and succeed in this region. Our potential is not how much we are accumulating in resources but how much we are doing to change the life of others in greater scope.Fred is now out of college. He is remaining with several terms to finish his course but due to financial contraints,Fred cannot continue. i don't know we n help Fred work for us in the lab by collecting simple community stories to enable him finish his college. August 05 - Sarajevo's story from Paul -Thank you. I have been here for three days. It is one of the most intense places I have ever been. Sarajevo is itself exquisitely beautiful, with architecture dating from the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires while at the same time everywhere the scars of war are evident. "Some of the greatest hardships fell upon citizens already facing lives of struggle, the elderly, the vulnerable and the poor," he said. The news out of New Orleans is getting harder to believe every hour. The world's only superpower seems to have lost control of the situation. Thousands of people are still stranded without food, water or medicine. Tens of thousands more homeless.

Lawlessness is spreading around the city with police and national guard trying to control things but ambulances and rescue helicopters have been shot at by armed thugs. Those stranded at centres like the sports stadium are in appalling conditions with grim sanitation and supplies. There are attempts to get a few thousand people a day out of the city as the Mayor has ordered the forced evacuation of everyone, but it is pitifully slow and the people have little or nothing to go to. As for the bodies - there is still no reliable estimate of those dead. But now the Mayor and a senator have put it in the thousands.

People are starting to ask whether or not the warning and evacuation was mishandled. If people are being forced to leave now then why not at the weekend before Katrina struck? And there are increasing voices emerging about the warnings that were ignored.

Federal funds were denied to strengthen the levees. Was America so obsessed with fighting terror that it forgot what homeland security really means? And does the demographic breakdown of those worst hit - predominantly poor and black have anything to do with how little was done to help them?

It is worth noting that George Bush's new chief of Homeland Security was out launching September as National Preparedness Month. You couldn't make it up. --------------------

the tragedy in New Orleans will become apparent:

1. After 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency shifted from 75%
of its efforts being focused on natural disaster planning, preparation and drills to 75% being terrorism event reaction grants administration and terrorism event planning and preparation. Despite what one might think, there is little overlap between the two kinds of events. There has been a major departure of experienced FEMA managers with knowledge in natural disasters due to the focus on terrorism, and their replacement by terrorism experts.

2. All across the US there is a terrible lack of coordination in issues related to flood control projects between the Federal, state and local government. There is also a lack of coordination between the construction of projects and their day-to-day operational management. In particular, in Louisiana is up to local officials to decide if volunteers will be recruited to stay in flood control stations when
major storms approach, at the risk of of the volunteers dying if the stations are destroyed. New Orleans did not ask for such volunteers.
Adjoining suburban areas did. The volunteers in adjoining areas were able to activate back-up generators and keep pumps working that
helped to avoid catastrophic flooding in the suburbs. In New Orleans the stations were unmanned. The power went out -> the pumps went off ...

3. There had been proposals for over 20 years to build stronger flood control stations and barriers in the New Orleans area. It was not supported by short-term taxation logics.

4. The evacuation plans were all designed on individuals and families driving their own cars out of New Orleans. No consideration was made
for the approximately 20% of the city that was dependent on public transportation. No one with knowledge of public transportation usage
was involved in designing the evacuation plan until it was very late.

In 2002, The New Orleans Times featured a 5-part award winning series written by John McQuaid & other journalists: Surging water is a huge threat to New Orleans. The Red Cross says that there will be a very high death toll if a levee breaks unless all citizens are evacuated in time- something more than likely if a category 4 hurricane hits New Orleans directly. Update CNN Sept 2 interview with McQuaid: the response we needed to this problem requires sustained attention and investment from every level of authority. Clearly that response was not achieved within the 3 years since this report.
